Wonder potion
This is a different blog this month and it is on a topic that should be at the forefront of everyone’s mind. We spend a lot of time training in martial arts on the best way on how to defeat an opponent or how to survive a violent street assault but we spend little time on looking after ourselves and keeping ourselves in good condition and health.
Some of us consume way too much alcohol, coffee, teas and energy drinks that coupled with poor sleeping habits and is it any wonder we cannot perform at our best. If we now add stress to the mix from work, children, family, bills, rent, mortgages, car breakdown and a whole host of other things it is no surprise that people eat and drink too much to gain some kind of comfort.
It is strange the way we treat our bodies as we only have one and we owe it not only to our families but to ourselves to keep it in the best condition possible. You would not put used cooking oil in a Ferrari car and yet we think of nothing by self medicating with alcohol and over eating with chocolates, cakes, biscuits, crisps and other goodies. (sorry did I say goodies)
This is not a blog to preach on what you must do, they are only thoughts that hopefully make you think about the way you do things and about your martial arts, it is designed just to help you make informed choices.
For the last three months I have been having a drink before bed which has really helped me with sleeping and digestion and has helped calm me down before bedtime ready for sleep. I would like to share it with you all and if you have some benefit from it as well please let me know.
It is a cup of hot chamomile tea with a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and a tablespoon of lemon juice and that is it.
Chamomile tea can be consumed any time of day, but may be best consumed in the evening for its relaxing effects and potential sleep benefits. Or, if you have diabetes, it could be worth adding a cup after your meals. You can either buy chamomile in teabags, or as a loose-leaf tea.
Benefits of Apple cider vinegar It can help improve digestion, support immune system, lower blood sugar levels, condition hair (missed out there being bald), boosts nutrient levels, aids weight loss, improves heart health. Lemon juice is high in vitamin c, helps control weight, prevent kidney stones, protect again anemia, improve digestion.
You of course can adjust the amounts according to your tastes and some people put honey in it or a little paprika, but find out what works best for you.

Just a little added information, the stomach is on the left side. When we sleep on our left sides, the stomach is below the esophagus, which makes it more difficult for stomach acid to rise up the digestive tract against gravity. Instead, gravity helps acid stay in the stomach, potentially reducing the risk of heart burn. Also I found helps is put an extra pillow under your head to keep your head higher than your chest.
Please consult your doctor or health care professional before embarking on any new diet or exercise program.
